This project, sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, is the open contest for which any company and individual could apply, including professional and amateur. It could discover the talented human resources that will play a great role in the Japanese leather industry. It could also appeal the high grade of Japanese manufacturing technology both in domestic and international society and establish the international position to enlarge the world market.
In this year contest pattern design drawings or completed product are applied in the six categories or seven sections, 1)shoes(men’s) 2)shoes(women’s) 3)handbags and bags(men’s and women’s) 4)belts 5)gloves and 6)leatherwear.
In the process of the contest we will realize the leather goods as culture that grows up from the traditional delicacy of Japan and the wonder of Japanese leather manufacturing technology.
Judges are Mr. Tetsuro Nagase, stylist who has made remarkable activities in Tokyo Collection, Mr. Muga Miyahara, photographer who has made excellent woks in advertising photography and some other people to participate.
The first audition shall be in the end of October to select the good woks. The winning designer or manufactures of JLIA will produce the prototypes of those good works.

The second audition shall be in late December and the final results will be announced publicly in the magazine. The applicant for grand prize is awarded 300,000 yen and those for category prizes 100,000 yen, each in the seven sections.
In the middle of March 2006, the show and awarding ceremony will be held in the famous hotel in Tokyo to hand out the magazines that carry the articles on the awarded products.
JLIA is thinking that the communication through the magazine could stimulate the applicants in developing the design activities and enhance the consumer interests in the leather goods.
The Japanese leather industry is greatly influenced by the globalization of consumer market and material provision and is required for overall revitalization. From the international point of view JLIA has developed the various activities, visiting the related associations and the governmental organizations of many countries and exchanging the information for mutual understanding and industry cooperation As a task for human resource development, JLIA has opened the leather lectures in the professional schools of fashion and the training classes of the basic leather knowledge for the sales force.
This contest project is closely related with the industry vitalization. Through the contest activity JLIA enlightens the inner and outer people of the industry, displays the Japanese uniqueness in the international leather market and nurtures the Japanese leather goods as highly competitive products.
